Verizon to announce CDMA iPhone 4 on Tuesday

As speculation surrounding Verizon's iPhone reached a fevered pitch, the Wall Street Journal has confidently announced that the carrier has finally landed Apple's iPhone.

The report said the new deal will "upend the balance of power in the industry, ending Verizon rival AT&T Inc.'s exclusive hold on the device and leaving smaller players like Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA facing two well-capitalized competitors offering the world's most popular smartphone."

Citing "people familiar with the matter," the report said that while "it wasn't immediately clear when Verison would have the devices in its stores," the carrier would be announcing details in its press conference scheduled for next Tuesday in New York.

It also said the device "would be similar to the existing iPhone 4, but run on the carrier's CDMA technology." Verizon made a big splash at CES surrounding its "4G" LTE deployment plans, but that new network won't be available for voice calls until 2012.

Impact on AT&T, other US carriers

The report noted that Apple's exclusive deal with AT&T, which started in 2007, "has fueled much of the carrier's subscriber growth and has given it a solid lead in smartphone customers."

Additionally, it noted that "the arrangement between Apple and AT&T was groundbreaking at a time when carriers tightly controlled the appearance and function of their phones, and put Silicon Valley companies like Apple and Google in the wireless industry's driver's seat."

At the same time, while "Apple feels it has had tremendous success through its exclusive relationship with AT&T," the report stated, "it recognized that it needs to partner with Verizon to grow sales faster in the US." A note filed by analyst Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros in December said the carrier was "still excited" about launching Apple's iPhone early next year "to combat slowing Android momentum in the US."

Verizon has partnered with HTC and Motorola over the last year to promote Android phones in a hedge bet against BlackBerry's inability to deliver a worth competitor to the iPhone. However, the carrier has since seen a drop in Android interest with the arrival of iPhone 4.

Despite its "Droid" branded push in 2010, "Top Verizon executives have continued to meet regularly with their counterparts at Apple, however" the report noted, "and have long expressed interest in carrying the iPhone, which could help add to the carrier's base of 93 million subscribers."

AT&T has braced itself for the loss in iPhone exclusivity that it has seen coming for some time, working to lock existing iPhone 4 buyers into two year contracts and relying upon family and business plans that make it hard for individuals to leave the carrier.

Other US carriers may be hit harder, including T-Mobile and Sprint, neither of which are expected to gain access to iPhone sales, even though the new CDMA iPhone should work on Sprint's network, and the existing iPhone 4 can work on T-Mobile's, albeit limited to the much slower, 2G GSM/EDGE service.

The big event

The report noted that Verizon's iPhone launch event "threatens to overshadow Verizon's keynote address Thursday at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, where the carrier touted its new 4G network and announced a number of Google-powered phones and tablet PCs designed to make use of the network's capabilities."

Verizon has invited Mac journalists to the event but has notably excluded Gizmodo staff from its invitation list, a move that all but confirmed that the event involved Apple.

This week, AppleInsider was first to report that Apple had been quietly restricting employee vacations at the end of January and in early February.

On Friday, another rumor surfaced, suggesting that Apple could have a major product launch scheduled for Feb. 3.

iPhone 5 Release Date: Apple iPhone 5 Due January 2011?

Speculation seems to be growing surrounding the iPhone 5 release date following claims that people within the online community have been told that they can expect to see the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5G on the market as early as later this month.

There is no evidence that you will be able to buy the new iPhone 5 handset at the end of the month but the rumours that are laying claim to the story are really causing a lot of hype and interest within the mobile using market.

The promise of new evolutionary features and corrections of the problems that were being reported with the iPhone 4 after it’s release, it seems that almost every iPhone 4 user will be looking to get their hands on the new fifth generation of the phone.

There are a number of sceptical members of the online forums that are claiming that the iPhone 5 is set to break into the industry very soon, those users saying that although there could be a new release from Apple at this time, they believe that it will be the Verizon version of the iPhone 4, simply because Apple have not had the time to develop an evolutionary phone, a claim given to the iPhone 5 by it’s Apple creators.

Google Officially Posts Android 3.0 Sneak Peak, Touts “Holographic” UI

If you were on the Internet today, you undoubtedly saw that Google accidentally posted an overview video of Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” on YouTube earlier — then quickly pulled it. Before they did, we were able to record it and grab all the key screenshot of the Tron-like overview. Now Google has officially reposted the video, as well as a brief overview of Android 3.0 on their mobile blog.
Google was clearly waiting for the OS to be previewed at CES in Las Vegas. Now that it has, here’s what they have to say:
Honeycomb is the next version of the Android platform, designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. We’ve spent a lot of time refining the user experience in Honeycomb, and we’ve developed a brand new, truly virtual and holographic user interface. Many of Android’s existing features will really shine on Honeycomb: refined multi-tasking, elegant notifications, access to over 100,000 apps on Android Market, home screen customization with a new 3D experience and redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive. We’ve also made some powerful upgrades to the web browser, including tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, syncing with your Google Chrome bookmarks, and incognito mode for private browsing.
We first reported on Google working on this completely revamped UI for Android back in June. At the time, they were aiming for the 2.3 “Gingerbread” release, but that was pushed — to what you see here in 3.0.
At first glance, this UI looks impressive, and an improvement over what Android has looked like until now. And that is particularly important if Google is going compete with the iPad and attempt to own the tablet space in the same way that they have the smartphone space this year.
Personally, I think I’m most excited for the true Chrome-like tabbed browsing. Obviously, Google says to stay tuned for more, as Honeycomb isn’t expect to hit until later this year.

Honeycomb is Android 3.0. Or is it Android 2.4?

For months now, it's been assumed that Honeycomb would be version 3.0 of Android, but now the evidence that the next iteration of Google's operating system will actually be version 2.4 is mounting. The rumor first popped up a couple of weeks ago when we heard that Honeycomb may arrive as Android 2.4, and that it could come as soon as February. More recently, there have been several reports of websites seeing Android 2.4 appearing in their server logs, while Android 3.0 had little to no presence on those logs.

Considering how many changes Google is making in Honeycomb, and the fact that it's said to be focused on optimizing the OS for use on tablet devices, it makes sense that Google would move on to 3.0 rather than relegate Honeycomb to a 2.x release. Plus, we have to remember that Eclair included both Android 2.0 and 2.1. On the other hand, the rumor that started all of this "Honeycomb is 2.4" talk said that Google has something major up its sleeve for version 3.0, so perhaps El Goog has an even bigger revision saved for Android No. 3. Whatever Honeycomb ends up being, though, two things are certain: the OS will bring a wave of tablets with it, and it's almost certainly going to make Android more awesome.

Which piece will it be today? Why, a brand new music player of course. You can grab the download link below if you like, or continue to read some words about it as I type them out. I know which one I’d do if I didn’t already have it. It looks like the 3D photo gallery you’re used to and works like a charm.

Divided up into Artists, Albums, and Songs, with few options (but who needs em?) for playing the music, this player shouldn’t surprise to that much of an extent. On the other hand, is it a surprise you want or a really awesome working music player? Download the thang for yourself now!

Windows Phone 7, CES Tablet Predictions Marked Microsoft's Week

The last week of 2010 was a quiet one for Microsoft, as the company—along with many other tech stalwarts—geared up for January's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Rumors suggest that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will use his opening keynote at the show to reveal a line of Windows tablets. Such an event would mirror his CES 2010 keynote, when he unveiled a tablet prototype built by Hewlett-Packard along with devices from two smaller manufacturers. Microsoft doubtlessly hopes that 2011 will bring a sea change in its tablet fortunes—unlike 2010, where Ballmer's early optimism translated into nothing more than a very small handful of limited-run devices.

On Dec. 21, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft would use CES to debut a version of Windows leveraging ARM Holdings technology. That report cited unnamed sources "familiar with Microsoft's plans," and suggested the new Windows software "would be tailored for battery-powered devices, such as tablet computers and other handhelds." Both Microsoft and ARM declined to comment to Bloomberg.

If that story proves true, Microsoft's tablet plans could involve Windows devices running both ARM chips and Intel's upcoming "Oak Trail" Atom processors. Microsoft executives have repeatedly emphasized that Oak Trail will play a vital role in its upcoming tablet plans.

"Intel is going to come out with [its] Oak Trail chip around the first of the year," Bill Koefoed, Microsoft's general manager of investor relations, said Aug. 10 at the Oppenheimer Annual Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference in Boston. "And, we think, that's going to offer a lot of new capabilities. Whether it's better usage of battery life and the like, it's going to really help move the category forward."

Microsoft will most likely use CES to highlight continuing strong sales of Windows 7, its keystone software platform, and the emergence of Windows Phone 7, its smartphone platform. The company claims sales of 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices during its first six weeks of release—that figure represents sales from manufacturers to mobile operators and retailers, not consumers.

However, the company will probably continue not to comment on reports that Windows Phone Marketplace can be cracked—news that spread across the blogosphere after a Dec. 29 proof-of-concept video posted by Windows Phone Central.

"A ‘white hat' developer has provided WPCentral with a proof-of-concept program that can successfully pull any application from the Marketplace, remove the security and deploy to an unlocked Windows Phone with literally a push of a button," Windows Phone Central's Daniel Rubino wrote in a Dec. 29 posting accompanying the video. "Neither the app nor the methodology is public, and it will not be released (please don't ask). It is important to note that this was all done within six hours by one developer."

Microsoft has encouraged third-party developers to create apps for the marketplace, seeking to create an ecosystem that rivals similar offerings from Google and Apple. At least one analyst this week thought that the company was making progress in its app efforts.

"Released in October, WP7 ends 2010 with over 5,000 apps in its marketplace, a milestone it reached quicker than the Google Android platform, which took almost three times as long to reach the same level," Al Hilwa of research firm IDC wrote in a Dec. 29 research note. "Of course the circumstances for such comparisons are never identical, and Google followed a more gradual and tentative launch for Android compared to Microsoft's well-orchestrated big-bang approach."

In keeping with previous CES editions, Microsoft will almost certainly use its space at the event to show off hardware created by its partners. This year, that means Windows Phone 7 smartphones, including perhaps the Verizon devices reportedly in the pipeline. It means PCs from Dell and other manufacturers. The question is, does it also mean Windows tablets ready to challenge Apple's iPad?
