iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus discounts: Walmart, Sam's Club, Target offers smartphones for reduced price

As part of their holiday promos to attract more buyers, various retailers are now offering discounts for Apple's latest offerings, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
For those planning to make iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units as stocking stuffers this season, Walmart brings down the prices of the handsets by $70, which means that buyers can take home the iPhone 6 for $129 and the iPhone 6 Plus for $229. The handsets come with a two-year commitment with a carrier.
Interested buyers can also get the new iPhones for free through the retailer's trade-in program. Consumers can trade in their old iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, or iPhone 5C. The price, of course, depends on the condition of smartphones.
However, it is unknown until when Walmart will offer the discounts. Thus, buyers need to hurry before Walmart changes its mind.
Meanwhile, specialty store Sam's Club, a Walmart's affiliate, slashed another $2 off Walmart's price. Thus, the iPhone 6 costs just $127 while the iPhone 6 Plus costs $227, but these deals are meant for Sam's Club members only. On the positive side, buyers may be able to find the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with larger storage variants at Sam's Club, which may not be available in Walmart.

HTC One (M7, M8) Google Play Edition Receiving Android 5.0.1 Lollipop Update

HTC One M7 and HTC One M8 GPE (Google Play Edition) smartphones are receiving the latest Android 5.0.1 Lollipop firmware update, following the report of Samsung’s rollout of Android 5.0.1 update to its Galaxy S5 devices.

As of now, Android Lollipop’s market share is less than 0.1 percent, based on all Android devices that connected to Google Play services. The scenario might change soon, as many smartphone-makers began to roll out the new update aggressively.

The new firmware build is reported as LRX22C, which is based on Android 5.0.1, and that means, HTC will be rolling out Android 5.0.1 updates to every supported handset by skipping the original Android 5.0 version of the firmware. This firmware update packed in a 511MB package and available via OTA. In order to update your smartphones to the latest version of the software, your device need to have at least Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
HTC has also announced that the carrier version (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) of HTC One M7 and M8 will be getting the same Android 5.0.1 update by February 2015. That means, HTC will start rolling out the new firmware update to these devices in January itself.

iPhone 6, 6 Plus Availability And Wait Time Update: Apple Store, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, Best Buy, RadioShack, TargetAEAD

As the holiday season approaches, it's time to take another look at the availability and wait times for the Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. While supply for some phones has increased, with 16 GB versions plentiful, wait times for the 128 GB storage configurations of both phones can be several weeks to a month depending on the carrier.
At Sprint, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are available in the two lower storage capacities of 16 GB and 64 GB to be shipped within 2-5 days. The 128 GB variants of both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have longer wait times however, with the 128 GB iPhone 6 having a 2-3 week wait time in all colors, while the 128 GB Space Gray iPhone 6 Plus is also 2-3 weeks. You can pick up a Silver or Gold 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus slightly sooner, with a 1-2 week wait time.
At AT&T, the 128 GB Space Gray variant has a 1-2 week wait time, and is the only iPhone 6 model not available for immediate shipping. As far as the iPhone 6 Plus, the 64 GB Space Gray version has a 1-2 week delay, while the 128 GB in the same color has a 3-4 week wait. The Silver 64 GB iPhone 6 Plus has a 1-2 week wait, while the 128 GB is a 2-3 week wait. The 64 GB Gold has a 2-3 week wait as well, with the 128 GB Gold option available within a 3-4 week time frame.

iPhone 6 rivals by Samsung, LG, HTC suffering delays in Qualcomm's 64-bit Snapdragon answer to Apple's A8

Qualcomm's upcoming 64-bit Snapdragon chips designed to power new high end Android flagship phones including the Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4 and HTC One M9 are reportedly running into new issues that threaten to further delay any real competition to Apple's iPhone 6 juggernaut.

Snapdragon

A report by Business Korea claimed that Qualcomm's 64-bit Snapdragon 810 is facing new "hard-to-solve" problems including overheating, RAM controller issues and "an error in the driver of the Adreno 430 GPU."

The site attributed the "unexpected hurdles" to an unnamed industry source. Samsung, LG, HTC and most other leading Android licensees currently use Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips to power most of their smartphones, so any further delays by Qualcomm can only exacerbate the embarrassing desperation Apple's rivals are feeling as A8-powered iPhone 6 models set new sales records and grab additional market share globally.

Samsung, LG target Qualcomm's Snapdragon with Exynos, Nuclun

Samsung has its own Exynos Application Processor family, which it uses in tablets and in some smartphones, but remains largely dependent upon Qualcomm's Snapdragon and the chip's proprietary integrated baseband modem for its mainstream smartphone offerings in most markets.

LG has similarly developed its own internal Nuclun Application Processor to reduce its dependance upon Qualcomm, but both LG and Samsung have run into production and performance problems in developing their own chips, in addition to remaining dependent on Qualcomm for compatibility with mobile networks.

First HTC One M9 rumors suggest 'ultrapixels' get the boot

The first alleged details for the HTC One M8 successor may already be spilling online. And, spoiler alert, the handset is shaping up to be bigger and faster than today's flagship model.

According to information obtained by Chinese site MyDrivers, the so-called HTC One M9 could make its debut at Mobile World Congress in March 2015. As for what's in store for the next-gen handset, we may be looking at a 5.5-inch display with 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution, and storage capacities of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.
Reportedly powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB RAM, the M9 may also pack a 3,500mAh battery. Like its predecessor, the handset could employ dual front-facing speakers, possibly with Bose technology.
In terms of cameras, it appears that HTC may be ready to pull the plug on ultrapixels, its proprietary marketing name for describing its camera tech. Instead, the One M9 is said to feature a 16-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization. We might have seen this coming, as most HTC smartphones released in wake of the M8 offered megapixels, not ultrapixels.

Here’s an overview of what we already know about Samsung’s Galaxy S5 successor, based on leaks and rumors we’ve seen so far.
  • Samsung may release two different versions of the phone: a standard edition, and one with a curved display. The screen on the curved model may be rounded on both sides, unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge which features one curved edge.

It Looks Like Samsung Might Have Another Metal Galaxy Phone Coming Soon

Samsung may be preparing to release another Galaxy phone with a metal design similar to its Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy A3, and Galaxy A5 phones.
An application for a new Samsung phone with a model number that may belong to an unreleased device called the Galaxy A7 has just appeared on the Federal Communications Commission website (via Phone Arena).
The application itself doesn't tell us much about the device, but it does provide some evidence that Samsung is likely to launch a new phone in its A-series line. We saw similar applications appear just days before Samsung officially unveiled both the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 in October.
What we can tell, however, is how large the phone will be. The FCC's listing says it will measure 150 mm x 75 mm, which hints the phone's screen will probably be larger than five inches diagonally.

Samsung Gear S vs LG G Watch R specs: LG wearable parades traditional look, Samsung timepiece doubles as a smartphone

As timepieces become more and more novel by the minute, the competition becomes progressively stiff. Google, for example, is continuing to enrich its wearable lineup with spanking new watch wonders. The search engine giant has not wasted any second in creating smartwatches to stand out in the dome as it even introduced the brand-new Tizen OS for its future watch offerings. But it all comes down to two of its premier groundbreakers, Tizen-running Samsung Gear S and Android Wear's LG G Watch R.
The Samsung Gear S is of curved-rectangle shape, endowing it a futuristic look. There is a home button embedded beneath its screen. It has a rubbery plastic band that is replaceable. The LG G Watch R, on the other hand, went for the traditional look, which makes it a favorite. Its round watch face and its winder/ power button gets it closer to the customary wristwatch, giving it an impressively subtle smartwatch feel while giving it conspicuous wearable features. It comes with a leather strap that is replaceable as well. While the two took on design poles apart, it's the buyer's preference that will take over.

The HTC Desire 820s is a variant of the Desire 820 launched by the company in September. The smartphone seems to be meant for China market only, as there is no official word on its release in other regions. HTC had announced the Desire 820s via its Weibo account earlier this month.

Samsung to cut smartphone models by up to a third in 2015

Samsung will stop producing so many models of smartphones and focus on a core set of devices in the new year, the company said Tuesday.
Speaking to investors in New York, Samsung's head of investor relations, Robert Yi, said his company plans to cut the number of smartphone models it produces in 2015 by 25 percent to 30 percent, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Though Samsung is still a juggernaut in the mobile business, the company has watched its smartphone business start to falter in key markets, such as China. In China specifically, chief competitor Xiaomi has been able to increase smartphone shipments and get consumers excited about its products by delivering higher-end devices at budget-conscious prices.

Nokia says vanishing consumer brand may return

LONDON (Reuters) - Don't call it a comeback yet. But Nokia (NOK1V.HE:Quote) is thinking about how to revive its brand name in consumer markets just months after selling off its former flagship mobile phones business to Microsoft (MSFT.O: Quote) for more than $7 billion.
"I think you can expect our brand will return to the consumer world," Nokia's chief executive Rajeev Suri said on Friday when asked about rumors that the networks equipment maker was looking to re-enter the handset market.

Suri told investors at a presentation in London that his company will look to licensing the brand name to other firms rather than starting up a new handset business itself.

Sony Xperia Z4 release date in March; Specs include 5.5 inch screen display

The release date for Sony Xperia Z4 is speculated to happen in March and the device will be introduced at the Mobile World Congress.
Next year's tech event will be held on March 2 to 5, 2015. The company will most likely follow its previous release date timeline. Sony launched the Xperia Z2 at this year's MWC. The Sony Xperia Z3 was released just last September. Sony is notorious for updating its Xperia Z line every six months.
However, new reports claimed that the Japanese manufacturer realized that there is no need to update the smartphone in a very short span as it makes the consumers anticipate less for the newest smartphones thinking that they can always get the new smartphone in six months.

Samsung reportedly had problems producing all-metal Galaxy A3 and A5

This month, Samsung announced its first metal phones in the form of the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5. This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into metal construction (the Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha also had metal elements), and rumour has it next year’s Galaxy S6 will also have some metal elements. However, while other companies have been churning out metal phones for ages, Samsung has apparently had some teething problems producing its first full metal phone.
Word on the street is that the reason the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 are to enjoy such a limited release is because Samsung had a lot of trouble producing the phones themselves.

Samsung homes in on India for its mobile operating system 'Tizen' launch

NEW DELHI: India will likely become the launch pad for Samsung Electronics' own mobile operating system.

The Korean major is expected to launch a smartphone that operates on the Tizen operating system in India within a month, said people with knowledge of its plans. India has never been a launch destination for Samsung, and its plan now to bring the product first to the South Asian nation comes at a time when its leadership position in the local smartphone market is under threat from ho ..

According to sources, the phone is likely to have a 4-inch screen and dual-SIMs with a 3.2 megapixel camera and 512 MB RAM, and is likely to be affordably priced. In India, the affordable segment typically ranges between Rs 5,000 and Rs 15,000.

A Samsung spokesperson called the news "market speculation" and didn't comment further.

Hands-on with the new, free-to-use Office for iPhone apps

Microsoft has been pretty nice to Apple users over the last couple weeks. Last week there was a new version of Outlook for Mac that actually feels like it was made by the same company that makes Outlook for Windows. And today, the company has released several Office for iOS updates that make it substantially more compelling than it was before.
Version 1.2 of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for iOS adds free document editing for users with Microsoft accounts, Dropbox support, iPhone support, and more. We downloaded the new apps to take a look at the new phone UI, how the new stuff works, and exactly what features are still locked away behind Office 365 subscriptions.

Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review: Slim design, long battery life and sleek design

Samsung’s $419.99 CAD Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is one of two variants in the Tab S lineup that comprise the company’s top-of-the-line tablets. Along with the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, there are two tablets that are absolutely worth a look if you’re in the market for a first class Android-powered tablet.

I recently tested out the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 out and was very impressed with its great AMOLED screen that displays 2560 x 1600 pixels, which works out to 360ppi.
The Tab S 8.4 has an 8.4” display and is 125.6mm W x 212.3 mm H x a mere 6.6 mm D and it weighs in at 294 grams. The Octa-Core 1.3ghz CPU makes it a snappy little tablet. The standard 4900 mAh battery offers up to ten hours of playback and 12 hours of video playback time.

HTC swings to slim profit, but sales still down in 'challenging quarter'

What a difference a year makes: HTC was able to turn a profit in the third quarter thanks to the HTC One M8 and Desire smartphones.
The Taiwanese company posted a third-quarter net profit after tax of NT$600 million ($19 million). That's roughly a quarter of the profit made in the previous three months, but a big improvement over this time last year when HTC reported its first loss in a decade.
HTC isn't out of the woods yet. Its quarterly revenue of NT$41.9 billion ($1.38 billion) declined 11 percent from a year ago, and more than 35 percent from the second quarter, when the One M8 launched.
As one of the few pure mobile device manufacturers left in the industry, HTC has struggled to keep pace with larger rivals such as Apple and Samsung. Its results underscore the company's dilemma: It lacks the scale and resources to effectively compete against the players in the premium category, while upstarts such as Xiaomi and Chinese tech conglomerates such as Huawei are pressuring it from the bottom.

Samsung Galaxy A7, Galaxy A5, Galaxy A3 Launching Early-November: Report

Samsung's long-rumoured Galaxy A-series of handsets, the Galaxy A3Galaxy A5, andGalaxy A7, might be launched as soon as early next month by the Korean smartphone maker, as per a new report.
The Korea Times reports that Samsung, besides being tipped to launch the three handsets in November in China, is also hoping to claim back the market lost in that country to rising local smartphone maker Xiaomi. A second quarter report by Canalys found that Xiaomi had overthrown Samsung as the top smartphone maker in China, a fact that has propelled other companies to take Xiaomi head on, including Lenovo with a brand targeted specifically at competing with the 3-year old company.

The iOS 8.1 update fixes a lot of problems that annoyediPhone 6 Plus users for the last month. This is the third update since the iPhone 6 Plus release and comes as many shoppers are still waiting for an iPhone 6 Plus to arrive.
Instead of waiting months to releases iOS 8.1, Apple delivered the free update to the iPhone 6 Plus and other devices. Apple's iPhone 6 Plus selling unexpectedly well as supply equalizes, says T-Mobile CEO

Outspoken T-Mobile CEO John Legere on Monday said Apple's iPhone 6 Plus "phablet" is generating unprecedented demand for America's fourth-largest wireless carrier, and at one point accounted for about 55 percent of the company's smartphone sales.

In an interview at the Code/Mobile conference, Legere told Re/code's Ina Fried that, while both iPhone 6 models are selling well, the iPhone 6 Plus outperformed T-Mobile's estimates. The carrier was expecting the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to account for about 75 to 80 percent of all new iPhone sales.

"Overall demand for us was huge," Legere said. "We got hammered by it."

Sprint Wants To Give You A New iPhone Every Year, But Whose Deal Is Best?

When Apple launched the iPhone 6 last month, Sprint saw an opportunity to bring the Apple faithful over to the nation’s third-place carrier. Dubbed “iPhone for Line,” the new offering allowed customers to get Apple’s latest smartphone by making monthly payments while paying nothing up front. With Verizon and AT&T offering similar installment offerings, Sprint’s plan was in some ways less exciting than the marketing might have suggested. But now the carrier is back with an upgrade that allows you to get a new iPhone every year. While most people are well served by keeper their phones longer, if you’re one who always needs the latest and greatest model Sprint’s new deal is an intriguing option.

Smart iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus registration page is up

A day after Globe Telecom’s preorder page for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went up, Smart Communications’ registration page for the new Apple handset models has gone live, too.
It’s highly likely that both telcos will launch the iPhone at the same time then, probably on November 15 again.
Last year, the Apple iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c debuted in the Philippines on the same date. In 2012, the iPhone 5 was launched on December 15.
The official rollout of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the country could bring down the cost of the devices in the black market further. In September, the handsets fetched a ridiculous price of as much as P117,585.

Nexus 6 compared to iPhone 6 Plus, found to be bigger than bigger than bigger

The Nexus 6 is a big phone. You can tell that from the display size or from reading the dimensions. But nothing drives the point home than watching it being compared with phones that we are already familiar with.

TechCrunch did a hands-on with the Nexus 6 and there are two images from the article that are worth focusing on. The first is the image above, where the Nexus 6 sits next to the iPhone 6 PlusNow the iPhone 6 Plus is a big phone, but the Nexus 6 isn’t that much bigger despite packing half an inch of extra screen. But the more hilarious image is the one below.

iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus may be tough to find through the holidays

Apple CEO Tim Cook warned that demand for the new iPhones is far outstripping supply.

The result: the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus may continue to be a tough device to find through the holidays.
While Apple's suppliers have ramped up production of the new iPhones, Cook said the available supply of iPhones isn't even close to meeting customer demand. "We're not even on the same planet," he said on a conference call to discuss the company's fiscal fourth-quarter results.

How and where to use Apple Pay with your iPhone 6

Roughly one month after we first saw a demo of Tim Cook scanning an iPhone at a cash register to buy stuff, Apple Pay has arrived for the rest of us to check out. But before you go blowing your entire paycheck on everything from big handbags to Big Macs, there are a few things to keep in mind about the platform. Read on to learn more about how Apple Pay works, how to get your iPhone ready for it, and most importantly, where you can go test it out yourself.

Get your iPhone ready

Before you can start using Apple Pay, you need to have a compatible device and the right version of iOS. Apple Pay is compatible with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which are the only iPhones equipped with the requisite NFC radio antennae. Besides NFC compatibility, the other piece of the hardware puzzle is a Touch ID censor, but iPhone 5S owners are out of luck.

With earnings, Apple Pay, and China iPhone sales, Apple faces many questions today

On Friday, the company started selling its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus in China. And today, Apple Pay goes live. Then, after the market closes, Apple reports fourth quarter and annual earnings.

A cash-rich Samsung Electronics 005930.SE -2.33% is one of the most attractive technology stocks in the world.
The South Korean maker of cellphones, tablets, memory chips, display screens and televisions is out of favor in the investment community because of concerns about plunging profits in its mobile-phone division. HTC One (M8 Eye) launched for Rs 38,990, will feature a 13MP rear camera

We had reviewed the HTC One (M8) earlier this year and last night, HTC announced another variant called the HTC One (M8 Eye) at their Double Exposure event. The HTC One (M8 Eye) has started selling from today onwards for Rs 38,990.
The major difference between the HTC One (M8 Eye) and HTC One (M8) is the camera. While the M8 featured a 4-Ultra-pixel camera, the M8 Eye will feature a 13MP rear camera. Just like the M8, the M8 Eye retains the depth-sensing Duo camera on the rear side and a 5MP front facing camera. Apart from this, M8 Eye has the HTC Eye Experience.
