Samsung Galaxy Note 3 review: The Best Phablet Just Got A Lot Better

Along with one or two other handsets, the Galaxy Note 3 is one of the most anticipated devices of 2013. Has Samsung successfully refined the stylus-toting phablet formula? 10 million punters around the globe seem to think so. Just two months after its initial launch, Samsung confirmed the Note 3 has officially joined the “10 million Club,” joining classic handsets like the Galaxy S3, Note 2 and the Galaxy S4.

Design and build

While I’ve often been someone who’s decried Samsung’s exterior design, that’s most often been on the grounds that the company has precisely and selectively chosen slippery and glossy plastics which, to me, don’t exactly scream premium. I actually have no beef with Samsung’s broader aesthetic and the Galaxy Note 3 shows the company does know how to make a good-looking phone.

Samsung Says The Galaxy Note 3 Has Sold 10,000,000 Units

It's been just over two years since Samsung introduced the capacious Galaxy Note to an intrigued press corps at IFA in Berlin. Who'd have thought that it would turn out to be nothing less than a phenomenon, spawning a new sub-category in smartphones and innumerable flattering attempts at imitation? The original Note sold 10 million units by August 2012, but according to Samsung, the Note 3 has reached the same lofty goal in just two months.

That's units sold, not units shipped, according to this rather self-congratulatory post on Samsung Tomorrow, though I suppose they could be including Galaxy Note 3 phones "sold" to carriers and retailers. Either way, it's a lot of phones, probably only matched by singular iPhone models and Samsung's own Galaxy S4 by sales pace. It's even more impressive when you consider that it's one of the most expensive smartphones on the market, usually going for $700 retail or $200-300 with two-year contractual strings attached.

Samsung Galaxy Note3 “The Next Big Thing” ?

The new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has Android enthusiasts excited and Samsung loyalists boasting and bragging. This combination phone-tablet is definitely representing the Samsung family well. Similar in size to its predecessor, the Note, the Note 3 bares a slightly larger screen (5.7 inches compared to 5.5), a thinner and narrower body and it is also much lighter. The new dimensions make the Note 3 a more comfortable fit in your hand. Alike its cousin, the Galaxy S4, the Note 3 is packed with apps, Android and Samsung, that add ease, organization and fun to daily life. There are programs for voice recognition, fitness, translation, note-taking and lots more. But you will notice that the software and programs in the Note 3 are a bit scaled back [compared to the Note 2]; more user friendly, somewhat refined. To put it best, the Samsung Galaxy Note has grown up.

Galaxy Note 3: Frustrating, overwhelming, but is that part of its appeal?

I have been spending a lot of time with the Galaxy Note 3 as I approach the end of my T-Mobile return period. I am likely going to keep the Note 3 (I will explain why below), but I want Samsung to improve this fantastic product through some software updates and future software design decisions.

The Galaxy Note 3 is the best large display phone currently available and is an amazing device, but there are some things that really bother me so my fantastic HTC One is going to stick around as my SIM jumps between the two. The S Pen integration is fantastic, it's nice to have a removable battery and microSD card slot, the camera performs better than the HTC One in most situations, and Samsung's OLED display looks great.

Issues I have with the Note 3 include random closure of My Magazine, step backwards in Exchange support, Samsung's shotgun approach to apps and services, functions present that don't work reliably, and beta nature of Galaxy Gear connection.
