Is Samsung's latest phablet the answer to falling tablet sales?

(Relaxnews) - The company has just filed documents with the FCC detailing a new phone with a 720p resolution, a quad-core processor and an 8-megapixel back-side camera.
So far, so normal, but things start to get interesting when the display is detailed: the screen is a pocket-bursting, small-bag-requiring 7 inches from corner to corner. In other words, it's a tablet that makes phonecalls.
Samsung has form in this area. Last year it launched the Mega mid-level handset with a huge 6.3-inch display and there's every chance that the new handset, currently seeking approval in the US, is a bigger, better -- but mostly bigger -- 2014 model.

HTC Desire 816 Review: The Big Picture

HTC's Desire series of smartphones had a decent run during the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) era. These mid-range devices catered to people who wanted a phone that would perform well and was reasonably priced. In the Rs. 20,000 - 30,000 range, these phones stood up well to competition from Samsung and LG, amongst others.

With the new HTC Desire 816, the company intends to rekindle interest in this segment and hopefully reverse its run of bad fortune. This phone has a large 5.5-inch screen - a crowd favourite - and the twin promises of great camera performance and great battery life. There is no doubt that this phone will be very popular if those promises are kept.

Apple devices hacked by ‘Oleg Pliss’ and held for ransom

Hey, remember when Apple promised that their products were ‘unhackable’? Well, they were wrong.
iPhone and iPad owners in Australia were in for a real shock when they woke to a strange sound coming from their devices Tuesday morning. According to The Huffington Post, the sound was not an alarm, but rather an alert informing them that their device had been hacked and locked.
A message appeared on the screen, stating that their Apple device has been “hacked by Oleg Pliss” with a message demanding between $50 and $100 to unlock it.
Many who were affected by the hack took to Twitter to voice their concerns.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active for AT&T leaks

For the longest time, we’ve been seeing hints of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active in various leaks and rumors. Though we don’t quite know what’s so special about it, we can imagine what would make it useful. Today, we finally have a full render of the device to look at and decided if we really want it.

The Galaxy S5 Active is supposed to be made for “active” people, a lifestyle which I prefer not to follow. Looking at the device, it looks ruggedized to protect it from falls. While last year’s model added waterproofing and a metal back over the standard Galaxy S4, this year it needs a lot more to impress.
The Galaxy S5 is already waterproof, so that alone won’t make an Active device special. But from the pieces on the top and bottom of this device, it looks like it’ll be able to sustain some serious drops. Is this Samsung’s attempt at an ultra rugged flagship? We sure hope so!

Sony: A Walkman in an iPad age

Sony's latest bid to halt years of losses and resuscitate its brand has provoked snorts of derision among analysts who say it falls a long way short.

The criticism came after Sony president Kazuo Hirai on Thursday pledged to drag the electronics giant out of a painful restructuring in the current fiscal year and pointed to ultra-high-definition technology as a possible saviour for its money-losing TV unit.
Hirai, appointed in 2012 to revive a company mired in losses, has centred his attention on shaking up a troubled consumer electronics business, including the television unit, which alone has lost about 790 billion yen (252 billion baht) over the past decade.

Google has leapfrogged Apple in the power of its brand globally.
That is according to the BrandZ top 100 ranking, which is one of the annual reports that track the monetary value that brands contribute to a company’s worth. Apple had bested Google in recent years, but saw itself knocked out of the top spot in 2014.
The BrandZ rankings were led by tech companies in the top four spots. There were also some new entrants from the tech world: Twitter and PayPal both joined the top 100 for the first time this year.

HTC One M8 ‘Prime’ render shows itself online, sports a 5.5-inch QHD display and back camera bump

HTC is rumoured to be coming out with another version of the HTC One M8, aptly called the One M8 Prime. The specs have been floating around the web for a few weeks and over the past couple days, encouraged by a scuffle with HTC PR, reputable device leaker @evleaks has provided a plethora of additional information.
According to a number of Tweets, the HTC One M8 Prime will come with a similar design to the M8, but sport a unique “composite of aluminum and liquid silicone.” No indication of how the benefits of merging those two together – perhaps to make the device less subjective to bumps, scratches and water. In addition, specs have the One M8 Prime being the first HTC device with a Cat. 6 LTE radio, and will see it jump to a 5.5-inch 1440×2560 QHD display, 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB RAM.

Samsung says the Galaxy Tab 4 Education has been designed to be durable and easy to manage, as well as providing easy access to digital learning resources. We're taking that as bloated PR speak for "tablets in the classroom."

Samsung ATIV SE review: A great Windows phone that's really hard to find

I've waited a long time for Samsung to release a smartphone that runs Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system. I found WP8 appealing, but the Nokia hardware where it's most commonly available failed to impress. The Nokia Lumia 920 in particular was heavy, it ran hot, and you couldn’t swap out its battery, which drained at a ridiculous pace.

There was a Samsung ATIV S—a Galaxy S3 running Windows Phone 7—which saw wide release everywhere but in the U.S. And in late 2013 Sprint and AT&T got the ATIV S Neo, which was a step down in hardware from what Nokia was offering at the time. Now Samsung is shipping the ATIV SE. It’s not a Galaxy S4 running WP8, but it’s close. This is the phone I’ve wanted for a very long time.

HTC One Mini 2 Confirmed By Certification Scheme

After the HTC One M8 became the most leaked handset of all time, it was always going to be difficult for HTC to keep the miniature version under wraps. We now know it’s definitely coming soon thanks to the Global Certification Forum.
The GCF is an “independent certification scheme for mobile phones and wireless devices that are based on 3GPP standards.” The HTC One Mini 2 has been confirmed by the GCF after the handset received its certification.

Apple’s iPhone 6 Could Arrive One Month Early? Maybe, Maybe Not

But beware: the story's once more sourced to the enigmatic "supply chain."

As my colleague Harry McCracken illustrated in a deft chronicle of all the misguided rumors about Apple’s forever-elusive HDTV last Thursday, supply chain “sources” aren’t the surest hook on which to hang your prognostication hat. But that’s precisely where this new rumor about Apple releasing its next iPhone a month earlier than expected stems from.
Reuters, citing media in Taiwan (in turn citing the mysterious supply chain) reports that Apple’s going to unveil the next version of its iPhone a month earlier than expected.

Android vs. iOS Market Share: Google's OS Snags Q1 2014

More and more data seems to support the fact that Android is what's in. A new report shows that Android captured 80 percent of the smartphone advanced operating systems market during the first quarter of 2014.
According to an ABI Research report, a little over 240 million smartphones running Android or an Android derivative were shipped during Q1 2014. The total for smartphones with advanced operating systems (read: not a basic mobile phone) in the first three months rounds out to around 300 million. The numbers reveal a loss of 1 percent from Q4 2013 but a year-to-year growth of 24 percent.

iPhone 6 Video Concepts Show Thin New iPhone

A new iPhone 6 video concept shows what an iPhone 6 could look like with a thinner design that mirrors the iPad Air and a is available in a variety of color options.
Earlier iPhone 6 concepts showed what a new iPhone might look like next to the iPhone 5s, but this iPhone 6 video concept shows off a super-thin design that looks just like an iPad Air shrunken down to phone size. This is similar to the iPhone 6 leaks and rumors, but the edges don’t completely match the leaked dummy units that are showing up all over the internet.

Possible HTC J Butterfly 2 shows its face in freshly leaked image

Last year the HTC J Butterfly was an HTC One minus all the aluminum and for its successor, it looks like we could be seeing the same. Leaked online by @evleaks, the HTC J Butterfly 2 is making a brief appearance, showing off its all-glass face for the camera.

Bezel-hounds will no doubt have a field day with this phone, which you’ll notice doesn’t feature the HTC One M8′s aluminum accents to help fool the eye. Also, until we get a shot of the back, still up in the air is whether the phone will feature a nice high-resolution MP shooter, or HTC’s Duo Camera system a la the One M8.

Samsung SM-G906S features WQHD display and Snapdragon 805 according to pricing database

Rumors of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime just won’t calm down. Even though Samsung said that there will not be a more powerful model of the Galaxy S5, we constantly see more and more info supporting the contrary. And it’s possible a more powerful device will launch under a name other than Galaxy S5, but we can’t wait to see if Samsung really is going to offer something beefier.
The latest information comes from a pricing database in Hong Kong, showing us the specifications for a device called the SM-G906S. This model number has been mentioned in rumors before, so it’s nothing new. But the specs sure made us excited. It will feature a 5.1-inch WQHD (2560×1440) AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 16MP camera, and the unreleased Android 4.4.3.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Galaxy S4 - should you upgrade?

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, theGalaxy S5, is here. It was subject to truly monumental levels of hype, along with months of rumours in the run up to its unveiling, but now that we've got one in the office, how much of an upgrade is it over last year's model? We've put the Galaxy S5 side-by-side with the Galaxy S4, comparing the two in every area to highlight the differences and improvements Samsung has made.
We've gone beyond mere specification comparisons to include camera quality comparisons, benchmark results, battery life and detailed display analysis to deliver a final verdict on which is the better phone. Hopefully this will help you make up your mind when deciding whether to pick up the new model, or hold onto your current handset until the end of your contract.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Review: A Diamond In The Rough.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is official and – not to dampen the mood too much – it looks quite a lot like its predecessor, the Galaxy S4. The handset itself is bigger and has a 5.1in Super AMOLED1920 x 1080 pixel display, placing it right between the S4 and Note 3, with regards to overall size and weight. Despite plenty of claims to contrary, the Galaxy S5 is – surprise, surprise – constructed almost entirely out of plastic. The only big change with regards to visuals is the dimple effect back panel, which we presume was added to aid grip.
Inside you have A LOT of new technology and sensors, tallying nicely with the myriad rumours we heard about biometrics playing a big part in the next Galaxy handset. True to the rumours, there’s a fingerprint scanner located inside the Home button, and a heart rate monitor on the back just under the camera port. The handset is also water and dust resistant with IP67 certification – which probably means there’ll be no Active version this time around.

Sony’s latest flagship has been unleashed on the world today, or at least on Canadians, as a carrier exclusive at Bell. The device, which sports a 5.2-inch 1080p display and a 2.3Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 801 SoC, has been hailed for its tremendous build quality, waterproof capabilities and excellent camera, much of which we agreed with in our review.

New Samsung Galaxy S5 ad forced to cherry pick lines from lackluster reviews

Samsung's latest Galaxy S5 ad creatively carved quotes from a series of independent product reviews on what appears to be an autopsy in search of healthy tissue.

The first quote to appear in the ad (above) is from Business Insider, which stated "the Samsung Galaxy S5 does a lot of things that Apple's latest iPhone can't do."

Lines from Steve Kovach's actual review didn't make the cut, such as: "Samsung's fingerprint sensor isn't as elegant as Apple's. It only works if you swipe your finger across the button, and you have to do so just right or you'll get an error message."

7-year-old girl injured by exploding Samsung Galaxy S2

Astana - A 7-year-old girl living in Astana, Kazakhstan, has received serious burns and injuries to her legs after her Samsung Galaxy S2 in her pocket exploded.
After hearing screams, her parents ran out to find her in the garden on the ground next to her smoking, ruined phone. It quickly became apparent that the device had exploded.
The girl was burnt so severely that a major skin graft will be required to rebuild the damage. It went all the way to the bone and the temperatures reached momentarily were so extreme that her skin fused to the jeans she was wearing.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs OnePlus One: Almost Too Close To Call

We check out the pros and cons of Samsung's Galaxy S5 and the OnePlus One

As one of the seasoned veterans of the industry with a massive following of fans, Samsung had a lot to prove with the launch of the Galaxy S5. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturer OnePlus is a brand spanking new company (founded December 2013), meaning it also has a lot to prove but for very different reasons with its debut smartphone, the OnePlus One.

Design & Build

Pre-release rumours aren’t always accurate, but there are often some which stem from certain sources and which are so pervasive they fit the pattern of an accurate report, and they then become very believable. One such rumour was that the Galaxy S5 would have a brand new re-design and use interesting new materials in its construction to deliver a premium finish; metal was pointed to quite a bit, but other things like polycarbonate composites and carbon fibre were also mentioned, too. Regardless, many were expecting something much more refined than earlier Samsung models.

Apple v. Samsung: Who is really winning the patent fight?

SAN JOSE, Calif. – When a jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $119 million for copying features of the iPhone, it was the latest chapter in the worldwide legal fight between the top two smartphone companies.
Friday’s damage award was far less than the $2.2 billion Apple demanded and the $930 million a previous jury ordered Samsung to pay after an earlier patent trial involving older-generation products. The jury also trimmed $158,000 from the latest award after finding Apple infringed one of Samsung’s patents in making the iPhone line.

Nokia XL Dual SIM: First Impressions

We've already gotten a glimpse of Nokia's entry into the world of Android, albeit a heavily forked version of it, with the Nokia X. Hot on the heels of the completion of Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia, the Finnish phone manufacturer showcased the larger sibling, the Nokia XL Dual SIM to a closed group of journalists and tech bloggers in Mumbai on Saturday. Nokia had formally announced the trio of devices - Nokia X, X+ and XL - worldwide at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in February, but only the Nokia X has launched so far.

With a much bigger profile, slightly better specifications, and a promise to regularly tweak and update the Nokia X platform running on the phone, we were eager to get our hands on the device. This wasn't a formal product launch, and so Nokia did not divulge any details about the launch date or price of this device. There is also no word on the Nokia X+ yet.

HTC One mini 2 press image leaks online, full specs revealed

Sure looks like HTC is going to hit the market with an entry-level version of the HTC One. Previous leaks hinted towards this device being called the HTC One mini 2 and these press rendering has arrived online that brings truth to its imminent release.
Reputable device leaker @evleaks has once again revealed the overall design and specs and follow-up to the One mini from last year and states this will a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 4.5-inch 720p display, 16GB internal storage, have a 13MP camera with a 5MP front-facing camera — but lacks the Duo Camera the dual LED flash — and come running OS 4.4.2 KitKat with Sense 6.0.

Apple-Samsung legal outcome won't likely end feud

Could the recent verdict in Apple's landmark patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics lead to lessened legal hostilities between the two consumer electronics giants?
Don't hold your breath.
Neither side came out a complete winner in a federal jury's decision late Friday that Samsung infringed on two of the patents that Apple had sued over. It ruled that Samsung phones did not infringe on two others, and awarded Apple $119.6 million, a fraction of the $2.2 billion in damages it had sought.
That award includes the jury's damages for another patent, concerning autocorrect features that the presiding judge had previously ruled had been infringed upon by Samsung. After deliberating for nearly three full days, the jury of four women and four men also found Apple infringed one of Samsung's patents, and awarded the Korean company $158,400.

You Won’t Believe What the iPhone 6 Headphones Might Do

By this point it is clear Apple is working on a new iPhone for 2014 that many call aniPhone 6. We’ve brought you many iPhone 6 concepts and several alleged iPhone 6 videos that show how thin this new phone might be.
Now we’re back with something really cool — iPhone 6 headphones that can track your heart rate, blood pressure and more.
Smart head phones may sound like science fiction, but a leak, an Apple patent and a key Apple hire all point to the potential for the most advanced iPhone headphones ever to arrive with the iPhone 6 this fall.

Should You Buy an iPhone 5S Now or Wait For the iPhone 6?

One of the most difficult decisions when it comes to upgrading your phone is whether you should purchase the newest model or wait for the next generation to come out.
That choice becomes even harder when you're dealing with the iPhone, since there seems to be a new rumor about the iPhone 6 every day.
For those wondering whether they should upgrade to an iPhone 5s or hold out for Apple's next smartphone, here are a few things to consider.

Why Apple's iWatch Will Sell Better In An iPhone 6 World

We will not, indeed, see the first peek at the iWatch at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at the beginning of June, according to a report from John Paczkowski at re/code yesterday. “Sources familiar withApple AAPL +0.16%’s plans tell Code/red that Tim Cook will not use WWDC to unveil Apple’s mythical wearable device,” Paczkowski writes. “Nor will he use it to show off a new Apple TV, or even preview the new software the company is developing for it.”
If true, this would be significant because, according to Stuart Miles of Pocket-lint last week, “Announcing an iWatch at the show, but then not launching it until September would allow the media, consumers, and naysayers to discuss, dissect, analyze, and be educated over a couple of months into why you would want a smartwatch and why you won’t be able to live without one.”  But if Apple is not going to unveil the iWatch at WWDC, this same line of reasoning would suggest that there will be no iWatch this year at all.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Sony Xperia Z2 vs HTC One M8

Over the last few weeks Samsung has launched its Galaxy S5, Sony has revealed its Xperia Z2, and HTC has released the One M8. Each of these top flight handsets has its own plus points, and the uniting factor is that they are all vying for your attention if you want to be at the cutting edge right now.
Of course, that will change soon enough. We’re hearing about a possible HTC Prime, and Sony has recently started launching a second flagship handset in the latter part of the year. And other makers will come along with new top of the range phones, too. But for now, those who are after the very best phone they can get have a three way choice. So, is there an obvious best or an obvious worst phone among this trio? Let’s find out.

Apple wins $120 million in patent lawsuit against Samsung

SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Samsung was ordered Friday to pay Apple $119.46 million (U.S.) after a Silicon Valley jury found the South Korean company guilty of copying key features of the iPhone in creating its own line of smartphones.
The verdict was a far cry from the $2.2 billion sought by Apple and the $930 million it won in a separate 2012 trial making similar patent infringement claims against older Samsung products, most of which are no longer for sale in the United States.

Samsung infringed Apple patents, U.S. jury says

A California jury determined Friday that Samsung infringed Apple smartphone patents and awarded $120 million in damages.
The panel delivered its verdict in federal court San Jose in the latest lawsuit involving the two tech giants. It also ruled that Apple infringed Samsung patents and awarded $158,000 in damages.
Apple Inc. had sought $2.2 billion after accusing Samsung Electronics Co. of infringing five of its patents covering functions such as slide-to-lock, universal searching, quick linking, automatic word correction and background syncing.
