With companies like RIM planning to run Android apps in a non-native way, there is rising interest in virtual machines that enable this. The most interesting independent option is Myriad's Alien Dalvik, an implementation of the Google Dalvik Android VM for other operating systems. Its first target was MeeGo, and now the technology is moving into the one area where the Intel/Nokia system is almost guaranteed to thrive, the connected car.
Myriad has announced a program for the much studied wireless auto sector, and says it is in talks with many leading carmakers to bring Android apps to vehicles. Alien Dalvik enables most Android apps to run unmodified on a broad range of platforms. It has its eye on niche smartphone OSs, and the chance for supporters to offer an immediate apps base via Android players, while they build up their own. RIM is adopting this approach for PlayBook and the same will be seen on the cloud OSs such as MeeGo and HP webOS.
