Rumoured HTC One Successor May Pack Snapdragon 800 and 5-inch Display

HTC’s as yet unannounced M8 smartphone is rumoured to be the company’s flagship device for 2014. The handset cropped up in some leaked images late last week and now we’ve got some specs to go along with those photos.
This info comes courtesy of reputable device leaker @evleaks, also known as Evan Blass, who is predicting a 5-inch, 1080p display with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, and Android KitKat. It’s not clear if Blass is working off of a tip or if these predictions are all his own.

HTC One Developer Edition and unlocked models receiving KitKat starting TODAY

HTC is doing it again. Not one to rest on their laurels, it appears that HTC is still going hard in the paint. updating their flagship smartphone — the HTC One — to the latest version of Google’s mobile OS: Android 4.4 KitKat.

Beginning today, those who purchased the HTC One Developer Edition or unlocked models can expect KitKat to hit your devices in time for the holidays, complete with HTC Sense (yes, this is a good thing). It’s pretty crazy when you think about it. It was only last week the Nexus 4 received Android 4.4 KitKat, along with the Google Play edition devices shortly after.
As a phone running a “skinned” version of Android, we almost can’t believe HTC has managed such a quick turn around, leaving most other guys (Samsung, Sony, LG) in the dust. Way. To. Go.

Apple spend £350 MILLION to make more sapphire glass for iPhone 6 screen

The iPhone 5S has only been available for two months, but Apple has spent $578m (£353m) to speed up development for the iPhone 6.
Apple are ploughing their resources into the development of the special type of glass it will use for the screen on the next iPhone.
Experts predict that Apple will use sapphire glass for their next screen.
This glass is more expensive and trickier to produce than the Corning Gorilla Glass Apple currently uses.
Apple currently uses sapphire glass on the iPhone 5S's Touch ID button, and on the cover of its rear-facing camera.

Rumoured iPhone 6 features could include 3D vision sensor

The iPhone 5s was just released, but rumours are already starting to circulate on the Internet regarding Apple’s inevitable iPhone 6.
Remember how Apple recently acquired Primesense, the company behind Microsoft’s underwhelming first Kinect Xbox 360 accessory? Well, the technology being developed by Primesense could be implemented into the iPhone 6, giving the still-unannounced phone 3D sensing capabilities.
This feature would allow people to take a picture of an object and instantly get information regarding its size and weight. It could also be used for advertising purposes. Say your Xbox One breaks and you take a picture of it so you can complain about your misfortune to the Internet. With 3D sensing, the camera would detect what object you’re snapping an image of and provide you with related links to that item, all pulled directly from the Internet.
In an article on adage, James McQuivey discussed how this new technology could potentially be utilized.
“A phone with that capability could perhaps take a picture of your recently expired refrigerator, for example, and be able to immediately recommend new refrigerators that would fill the exact same space, not to mention match the colors in the rest of your kitchen,” wrote McQuivey.

iPhone 5S beats iPhone 5's take up

The iPhone 5S has been a bigger success than its predecessor, according to one advertising company.

Statistics released by Fiksu show that in the 69 days since the iPhone 5S first hit shelves, it has accounted for 7.98 per cent of all iPhone usage. By contrast, the iPhone 5 accounted for 6.94 per cent of total iPhone usage in its first 69 days on sale.
Fiksu offers app marketing services for companies like Coca Cola, Groupon, Zynga and Disney. The statistics are based on the model of iPhone pinging its advertising servers.
The company also revealed the percentage ofiPhone 5Cs being used. It said that in the first 69 days on sale, the iPhone 5C managed to account for just 2.78 per cent of iOS devices.

iPhone Cyber Monday 2013 Deals: Where To Find Best Sales On iPhone 5S and 5C

It can be tough keeping up with all the Apple Black Friday deals this year especially with so many major retailers like Best BuyWalmart and Targetall selling iPhoneiPadsiPods and other iOS devices. Luckily for you we have been able to round up most Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals to share with all Apple fans. We have brought you Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals for smartphones, DSLR cameras, TV's, video games and consoles. In this piece we will share the Cyber Monday deals for Apple's latest iPhone 5S and 5C devices.
Unfortunately the iPhone 5S and 5C don't have as many Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals as the Mac, iPad, iPods and Apple TV. For Black Friday and Cyber Monday Apple is offering gift cards for select items bought through their store, but it appears as if the iPhone 5S and 5C are not part of this deal. However, there is some good news Best Buy, Walmart and T-Mobile are all offering some deals on Apple's latest smartphones. Unfortunately some of these deals won't go past the weekend into Cyber Monday.

Apple Store Black Friday Sales: iPad Deals + Best Bet for Power Users

The Apple Store is ready for shoppers who missed out on Walmart and Best Buy Black Friday sales this morning with a collection of online Black Friday iPad, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, iPod and even accessory deals for shoppers.
As we shared very early this morning the new Apple Store Black Friday sales are a change from the standard Apple tradition of cutting prices by $21, $41 and $101 on select products. This is a much better for shoppers in overall value, but it does mean paying a higher up front price and more tax on the purchase. Still, the Apple Store is a good place to look for Black Friday sales online today instead of looking for leftovers in the aisles at stores that opened up last night or early this morning.

Yep, It’s Looking Like an iPad Christmas

Apple isn’t known for discount sales, so when it has one, it’s news.
Today, in a promotional email, Apple unveiled its Black Friday deals, available on its online store and at its retail stores around most of the world. If you buy an iPad, Mac or iPod, you get an Apple gift card worth between $50 and $150. And if you buy online but live near an Apple store, you have the option of picking up your purchase at the store today. Otherwise, you can skip the crowds and take advantage of free shipping.

iPad mini 3: what we want to see

Our recent review of the iPad mini 2, or to stick with Apple's naming strategy, the iPad mini with Retina Display, found it to be a really capable little device.
Somewhat surprisingly it shares most of the cutting edge technology of its bigger brother, the iPad Air, and finally adds the Retina display which it had been lacking so sorely.
But it's not perfect. It's still too expensive, has no Touch IDsensor and the base 16GB capacity is rapidly becoming too small for many users. So what do we want to see in the next model?

Nokia attempts to take a bite out of Apple: Company hopes streaming service with 200 YEARS worth of music will rival iTunes

Nokia has launched its fightback against iTunes in the UK with MixRadio - a music service which offers 26 million songs available to stream for free.

This is the equivalent of 200 years worth of music and uses can rate individual tracks using the 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' buttons.

MixRadio then creates personalised mixes including songs a user likes, as well as tracks from similar artists or genres, all of which can be listened without adverts or subscriptions.

Nokia Lumia 525 launches

Nokia has unveiled another budget smartphone. Named the Lumia 525, it's the follow-up to the Lumia 520, with improved specs but still a low, low price.

Nokia's Lumia 525 is the company's latest wallet-friendly smartphone. And it could be the last handset Nokia ever announces, before it becomes part of Microsoft early next year.
It features the same 4-inch screen as its predecessor, the Lumia 520. It has the same 800x480-pixel resolution, too, and inside is the same dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor.
The camera is the same 5 megapixels, and the handset has the 8GB of onboard storage. So what's changed from the Lumia 520?

Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom camera and video test

Techradar puts both cameras through a rigorous test involving outdooors and low light indoors.
Nokia first unveiled its Lumia 1020 smartphone back in July. The device has a 4.5-inch screen and runs on a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor with Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system. It is available in a choice of yellow, white or black.
However, the Lumia 1020's crowning glory is its PureView 41-megapixel camera, which Nokia claims is able to produce some of the sharpest images possible by any digital camera.

Ex-Nokia engineers launch Jolla smartphone

A team of engineers who worked on the MeeGo operating system forNokia before it was ditched in favour of Microsoft Windows has launched its first smartphone since leaving the company to continue their work.
Finland-based Jolla was founded by ex-Nokia engineers in 2011 and will this week begin selling an eponymous smartphone for around €399 (£333). Just 450 units were available at a launch event in Finland last night, destined for those who placed early pre-orders.
The Jolla has a 4.5in display with multi-touch and rugged Gorilla 2 Glass. On the back you get an eight megapixel camera with an LED flash, and on the front a two megapixel sensor for video chats.
Jolla claims talk-time of up to ten hours over 3G or 4G LTE, and there is a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage which can be boosted via a microSD card slot.

Lumia 520 extends lead as most popular Windows Phone, as Nokia takes 90 percent of the market

For all of Nokia's efforts to promote its high-end and hero devices, it's still the humble Lumia 520 that's proving the biggest driver of Windows Phone uptake.
The Lumia 520, already thought to be the most widely-used Lumia device, has extended its lead as the most popular Windows Phone device, according to the latest Windows Phone share breakdown from advertising network Ad Duplex.
November numbers from Ad Duplex show that the Lumia 520 added 3.3 percent to its share of Windows Phone market, now accounting for 26.5 percent worldwide, followed by the Lumia 920 and Lumia 620 with 8.8 percent and 8.6 percent rise since October respectively.

Nokia Lumia 2520 release date, price and specs in the UK

Nokia has announced its first Windows tablet, the Lumia 2520. So here are the confirmed and official Nokia Lumia 2520 release date, price and specifications. Updated on 28/11/13.
In what is something of a rival to the Surface 2, Nokia has unveiled its Lumia 2520 Windows RT 8.1 tablet. Ironic considering Microsoft is buying out Nokia's devices business.
“The Lumia 2520 also comes with a number of unique software experiences that are exclusive to the Lumia family, including the exclusive "D ragons Adventure" interactive game developed in partnership with DreamWorks Animation. Additionally, the Lumia 2520 includes Nokia Storyteller, a Nokia developed application that introduces a new way to curate and relive images and videos as a story on a map, as well as Nokia Video Director, which offers the ability to edit and get even more creative with videos shot on the Lumia 2520 - as well as content from Lumia smartphones.” said Nokia.

iPhone 6 Release Date Rumour: Apple Phablet to Battle Google Map Using 3D-Sensor Technology by PrimeSense

The iPhone 6 on release date will show off a much-improved map and navigating applications made possible by the recent acquisition of the Kinect-like technology from PrimeSense.

Initially, the purchase was linked to Apple's gaming plans for its iOS devices like the iPhones and iPads or cool new features for the rumoured Apple TV. Tech blogger Jessica Lessin thinks otherwise.
The grand plan for the PrimeSense buy, involves enhancements for Apple's in-house map application. "PrimeSense's technology is much more strategic for mapping, according to one person familiar with the company," Lessin reported.

Thai man dies after alleged electrocution from charging iPhone 4S

According to a report from Thai language publication Daily News Thailand (via MacRumors), police in Rayong province on Monday found the unnamed man lying prone on the floor of his home clutching a burnt iPhone 4S in his left hand.

A graphic, lightly censored photo of the body shows severe burn marks on the victim's chest and neck area, prompting officials to suspect electrocution as the cause of death. The body has been taken to an area hospital for further examination.

While the exact circumstances are unknown, the man's father said he saw his son lying on the cement floor the day before the incident, noting he wasn't wearing a shirt due to hot weather,. Later that night, the a cry was heard from the victim's room, but the father ignored the noise, attributing it to his son's history of sleepwalking. The body was found the next morning.

Apple iPhone-tracking lawsuit dismissed

A lawsuit against Apple over iOS location tracking and infringed privacy has been dropped after two years, with the same judge that recently awarded the Cupertino firm $290m in damages from Samsungruling that outraged iPhone users hadn’t demonstrated any legitimate violations. The case, filed back in 2011, saw four iOS users complain that their smartphones were transmitting location data even when the feature was ostensibly turned off, with devices storing up to a year of records in an undisclosed log file.

The allegations were based on a legitimate glitch in iOS, which was found to be recording locations from iOS 4.0 onward. Two developers spotted the issue, and cooked up an app which could extract the positioning data each iPhone or iPad 3G was secretly storing.

LifeProof's nüüd Case For iPhone 5s Offers Waterproof, Touch ID-Compatible Protection

LifeProof has announced a new case, nüüd for iPhone 5s, which offers users of Apple’s latest smartphone waterproof, shockproof, and Touch ID-compatible protection.
The news of LifeProof’s case comes following similar offerings from Incipioand Bike2Power, both of which have protective cases for Apple’s iPhone 5s available to order online and come with their share of benefits.
LifeProof’s nüüd, however, places particular importance on style and size. It’s the “thinnest, lightest, all-protective iPhone 5s case ever made,” and allows users to interact with their smartphone’s Touch ID-equipped Home button and its touchscreen. There’s also room for the handset’s other buttons, ports, speakers, and microphone, meaning the enclosed iPhone 5s is in no way sealed off from the outside world.

iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s usurp Japan's smartphone market with 76 percent share: Kantar

It looks like Apple's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c smartphones are selling like hot cakes in Japan.

According to a tweet posted by research and data consultancy, Kantar, Apple's new iPhones accounted for 76 percent of new smartphone sales during the month of October. Interestingly, Japan's largest carrier, NTT DoCoMo sold a major number of iPhones in the same period. Out of the total number of smartphones it sold, 61 percent were iPhones. It's worth pointing out that it's the first time that the Japanese telecom operator is selling Apple's iPhones, and did not offer them before 2013.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c went on sale in Japan starting 25 September on NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank.

The post comes a few days after the Wall Street Journal reported that Japan has appeared as the fastest growing region for Apple,  taking over America, China and other Asian markets.

The report attributed Apple's success in the Japanese market to  aggressive marketing and huge subsidies from telecom operators.

Samsung Galaxy S5 release date tipped for March

The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date has been tipped for March with a launch event scheduled for February.

According to industry sources speaking to the Korean media, Samsung will release the Galaxy S5 in March next year.

Samsung will apparently start mass production of the Galaxy S5 in January 2014 and will announce the next flagship around Mobile World Congress in February.

Around 800,000 to 1 million Galaxy S5 devices will be made in January alone, with that figure jumping to 6 million by the end of February allegedly.

January was originally tipped as the S5 release date, but it seems this is actually the mass production start date.

Last year Samsung held a separate event outside of MWC to launch the Samsung Galaxy S4, so we expect they’ll do the same next year.

A separate rumour around the Samsung Galaxy S5 comes from ET News, which claims a Samsung official said the S5 will launch with the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2.

Despite the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch still being fairly new to the market, Samsung is seemingly already preparing the next-generation.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0: What You Need To Know Before Buying

Tablets are a tough market.  Unless you are Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo, or ASUS, the tablet market hasn’t been very kind to you.  Just because you do well in smartphones or personal computers doesn’t guarantee you will do well in tablets, either.  Tablet makers will do everything to differentiate their tablets. Amazon subsidizes their cheap tablets with a proprietary app and media store and also has direct video chat with a “helper”.  Apple had first mover advantage and now differentiates on experience, quality, the biggest tablet app store, and brand.  Samsung has adopted the ” spray and pray” approach that actually works well for huge, 800 pound gorilla companies. Whatever the input method, screen size, or price, Samsung will have something to offer you.  One of Samsung’s biggest methods of differentiation is on input method, featured in the Samsung Galaxy Note product line with the S-Pen.

U.S. wireless carriers reject Samsung’s ‘kill switch’ plan to curb smartphone theft

SAN FRANCISCO — Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, has proposed installing a built-in anti-theft measure known as a “kill switch” that would render stolen or lost phones inoperable, but the nation’s biggest carriers have rejected the idea, according to San Francisco’s top prosecutor.

District Attorney George Gascon said Monday that AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless, United States Cellular Corp., Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. rebuffed Samsung’s proposal to preload its phones with Absolute LoJack anti-theft software as a standard feature.

The wireless industry says a kill switch isn’t the answer because it could allow a hacker to disable someone’s phone.

Samsung, Xiaomi 'rise in popularity as Apple falls'

Samsung and Xiaomi are the big winners in China's smartphone market this year while Apple sales dropped, says a new research report.
The research, carried out by consumer insight company Kantar Worldpanel, finds Samsung's popular Galaxy line of smartphones helped the Korean company corner the largest share of the mainland's mobile market this year.
Galaxy S3 and S4 models have been especially popular, as has been Galaxy Note 2, a "phablet".
The combined sales of these three models accounted for 25 per cent of Samsung's total profit for the third quarter this year. Half of all "premium" smartphones, referring to phones with a price of at least 3,000 yuan (HK$3,817), sold on the mainland during the period were Samsung products.

Samsung ordered to pay Apple $290M for copycat features

A Silicon Valley jury on Thursday ordered Samsung Electronics to pay Apple $290 million for copying vital iPhone and iPad features.
The verdict covers 13 older Samsung devices that a previous jury found were among 26 Samsung products that infringed Apple patents.
The previous jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion. But U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ordered the new trial and tossed out $450 million of the damages after concluding the previous jury miscalculated the amount Samsung owed.
Samsung appealed that verdict and is expected to appeal the latest verdict.

How Samsung's multi-billion marketing splurge isn't delivering desired results

Seoul: Samsung Electronics is expected to spend around $14 billion - more than Iceland's GDP - on advertising and marketing this year, but it doesn't always get value for money.
The outlay buys the South Korean technology giant publicity in TV and cinema ads, on billboards, and at sports and arts events from the Sydney Opera House to New York's Radio City Music Hall. Google spent less on buying Motorola's handset business.

And Samsung, which has a market value of $227 billion, has made no secret of keeping up its aggressive marketing and promotion splurge as it seeks to make its brand as aspirational as Apple's. But the money it's spending doesn't always bring the desired result.

Apple, Inc. stock breaks $545 barrier as Samsung calls 'Crisis Awareness' meeting

Since January, Apple has bought back 47 million shares that would today have otherwise added over $25.6 billion to the company's market cap that's now increasingly closer to the $500 billion valuation the company had at the beginning of 2013.

The company is still down dramatically from stock price highs of around $700 last September, which when counting those then-outstanding shares, would have given the company a peak valuation of $658 billion.

Today, Apple has fewer outstanding shares than at anytime since 2009, meaning that the stock price would have to go up dramatically to reach last year's valuation.

Samsung's marketing splurge doesn't always bring bang-for-buck

HTC launches mid-tier smartphones

Smartphone vendor HTC Corp (宏達電) yesterday launched four new mid-end smartphone models to boost sales as demand for high-end smartphones stagnated.
“The smartphone market has come to a relatively mature stage where the product cycle is getting shorter than ever,” HTC Greater China region president Jack Tong (董俊良) told reporters on the sidelines of a product launch event.
To cope with this trend, “HTC needs to launch more products to cater to consumer needs,” Tong said.

Multiple Samsung, HTC devices banned from benchmark site for cheating

Despite the company’s denial last month, Samsung has been found by multiple reputable testers to cheat on benchmark tests. According to reports, several Samsung smartphones and tablets crank up the heat when they detect benchmark tests being performed. The problem seemingly extends beyond just Samsung though, and several other vendors including HTC and LG apparently juice their benchmark tests as well. Now, it looks like benchmark test providers are starting to fight back.
As noted by The Register, benchmark test creator Futuremark has publicly shamed Samsung and HTC by removing several of their devices from its website. The site ranks smartphones and tablets according to their performance on its 3Dmark test for Android, which measures graphics performance on mobile devices.

HTC One Max Review

The HTC One has been quite the smartphone for HTC as it has sold exceptionally well for the company through the several months that it’s been available. We’ve seen HTC come out with different colored HTC One devices to give you a bit of personalization for the smartphone, while also releasing the HTC One Mini and HTC One Max. The HTC One Mini brought the HTC One in a more manageable 5-inch body.

The HTC One Max, on the other hand, brings the device to those who enjoy phablets and want to be able to enjoy all that the HTC One has to offer. The HTC One features a 5.9-inch Full HD display, a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the device to help make it even more secure.

HTC EVO 4G LTE Android 4.3 Update Delayed, It Seems

Lately we’ve been paying most of our attention to the HTC One and Galaxy S4 lineup, but they aren’t the only ones waiting for a software upgrade. HTC’s popular EVO 4G LTE from 2012 is also on the wait list, and we’ve just received some new details from HTC themselves.
After initially hearing bad news for the EVO 4G LTE, HTC eventually confirmed it would receive Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Sense UI 5 by the end of 2013. Back in October HTC made the promise, giving them a few months to sort of the details and release the update before the holidays, sadly however that’s now changed. It looks like HTC EVO 4G LTE owners won’t see Android 4.3 until the new year, and don’t even ask about KitKat.

HTC launches Desire 601 dual-SIM, Desire 700 dual-SIM and Desire 501 smartphones

HTC has expanded its Desire range with the introduction of new mid-range smartphones, the Desire 700 dual-SIM, Desire 601 dual-SIM and the Desire 501. HTC announced the new Desire smartphones in Taiwan at a press briefing and also revealed the prices for the new phones, although it has not detailed the global availability of the Desire smartphones.

The HTC Desire 700 dual-SIM will be available at 13,900 Taiwan Dollar (Rs. 29,200 approximately), the HTC Desire 601 dual-SIM will be available at 10,900 Taiwan Dollar (Rs. 22,900 approximately) and the HTC Desire 501 has been priced at 9,900 Taiwan Dollar (Rs. 20,800 approximately). All the three newly launched Desire smartphones have been listed by HTC Taiwan's official site and was first reported by Android Community.

WIND launches the HTC Desire

The HTC Desire has made the trek across most Canadian carriers and the latest to add the entry-level Android is WIND Mobile. The prices fall inline with their competitors at $0 on the WindTab, then slowly rise upward to $349 outright. This might be a good device to couple with their upcoming holiday plan.
As for specs, the Desire has a 4.5 inch display (540 x 960 pixel resolution), a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, a 5MP camera that captures 1080p HD videos, a 2100 mAh battery, dual front stereo speakers and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Microsoft latest Surface 2 ads take jabs at iPad Air, Galaxy Tab 3

Microsoft has released a bunch of new commercial on its official YouTube account. Most of them focus on what the new Surface 2 can do and what the iPad Air and Galaxy Tab 3 can’t.

The videos show some of the Surface 2′s key features – the full USB port, the complete Office package, multiple account support and the gesture support.
Her are the videos which compare the new Surface 2 to the iPad Air.
And here we have Microsoft’s version of why the Surface 2 is better than a Galaxy Tab 3. Perhaps someone should tell the Redmond company that Samsung has brought a new slate to the market – the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition should be what the Surface 2 is aiming to beat.
