Couple tells TV news Christmas tearjerker about lost iPad for Down syndrome son — and they made the whole thing up

TORONTO — A Toronto couple who reported their Christmas gifts disappearing — including an iPad for their son who has Down syndrome — have been charged with public mischief.
Peel police allege the pair fabricated the theft.

The man and woman told CityNews that they were driving home from the mall on Saturday evening when a sheet of ice smashed their back window, causing their purchases to fly out of the vehicle.

The news prompted an outpouring of public support from CityNews viewers, some of whom wanted to help replace the gifts or repair the damage to the vehicle.

The couple also told police about the incident.

But Peel police say that during interviews with officers, the man admitted to fabricating the theft as well as how the damage occurred to the vehicle.
